Aromatherapy and Oils

Aromatherapy is the extraction of oils from plants, flowers and trees which is the art and science of essential oils. Every essential oil has its own unique chemical composition. By learning their individual properties, we can use them to enhance our life mentally and physically. Essentials are a safe method of maintaining health and well being.

Plants are full of smells, beauty to the eyes and enrich our lives with healthy benefits. They give us peace, comfort, joy, lift our spirit, and can improve our health. Over the years aromatic plants have been fought over, new lands were explored and traded for their value. Middle Eastern and Assyrias were known for their beautiful and soft skin by using essential oils. Egyptians priests used the resin and oils from plants to produced perfumes and were known as healers. Ancient Greeks used aromatics in the homes of the rich, physicians treated illnesses, while athletes and soldiers anointed themselves with oils for courage and strength. The Black Plaque in the 14th century killed millions of people in Europe and Asia. Oils from cedar, clove, pine, sage, rosemary, and thyme were burned in the streets, hospitals and sick rooms to help fight infectious organisms. Another plague in 1665 spread through Europe and Asia. Perfumers, handlers and those who lived around in towns where aromatic plants were grown were immune to the plaque and lived. Aromatherapy became a formal science in 1937 when the French chemist Renee Maurice Gattefosse was working in is lab and burned his hand. To relieve his pain, he plunged his hand into the closest liquid available, a tub of lavender oil. To his amazement his hand returned to a normal state, which he believed lavender was the cause. He dedicated his life to the study and use of essential oils for their medical benefits. Hence, the term Aromatherapy arose.

Essential oils are concentrated extracts of plants and flowers; the life force of plants. They can be found in flowers, leaves, resins, seeds, roots and grasses. Some plants produce more that 1 kind of oil. For example, the bitter orange tree produces neroli from its delicate white blossoms, petitgrain from its leaves and orange from the peel of its ripe fruit. For many oils, it takes a great deal of raw material to produce a small amount of essential oil. For example, it takes sixty thousand rose petals to produce one ounce of rose oil.

Each pure essential oil has its own individual property and effect. Some essential oils have a variety of properties that are beneficial for many purposes. Depending on the oils selected and proper administration, the effects of essential oils can be either stimulating or relaxing. They soothe and refresh the mind, beautify the skin and body, stimulate the senses, and induce feelings of calmness.
